CWA CARS FOR RIO’S LANDMARK

They are four out of more than 2,000 cabins coming off the production lines in Olten this year – but four very special ones…

CWA is supplying four reversible cabins to Rio de Janeiro’s famous SUGAR LOAF. And they are now on their way to Brazil.

Who is not familiar with the striking silhouette of SUGAR LOAF – the 394 meter mountain of steep granite rock on Urca Peninsula in Guanabara Bay? Rio’s landmark is served by a two-stage cable car offering spectacular views. Its cabins were also the setting for James Bond’s breakneck chase in “Moonraker”. The first stage leading to Morro da Urca was finished on 27 October 1912. That was followed one year later by the second stage to the summit of SUGAR LOAF. This year the cableway is celebrating its 95th anniversary.

A prestigious contract for CWA!

The cable car operating company CCAPA (Cia. Caminho Aéreo de Pão de Açúcar) is replacing the existing cabins. In order to maintain the recognition value of the cabins, the operator decided – in consultation with CWA – to place an order for REPLICA cabins. For CWA, the challenge was to produce a one-to-one replica of the existing cabins but with latter-day comfort and state-of-the-art cableway technology without any significant increase in weight.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

Length: 6230 mm

The cabins offer a comfortable ride for 75 passengers.
While it is winter in Europe, the cabins will be commissioned in Rio.
