Ocean Park Hong Kong: Funicular/Ropeway project

Invitation for Expression of Interest

The Ocean Park Corporation is responsible for the management and operation of Ocean Park, which is located near Aberdeen on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The park has conservational, educational, recreational and entertainment functions. Following the recent opening of Hong Kong Disneyland and the opportunity to capitalize on increasing tourist numbers, it is proposed to revitalize the Park and to enhance its role as a world-class marine themed park. The redeveloped Ocean Park will be divided into two major areas - The Waterfront, formerly the Lowland and The Summit, formerly the Headland - featuring more than 70 distinctive attractions.
Currently, the connection between the Lowland and the Headland is provided by a suspended cable car system. The existing cable car system was built in the 1970's. The system comprises two cable car loops which can each be operated independently. It is a monocable system, i.e. it only consists of a single cable. With patronage increasing since the opening of the Ocean Park in 1977, there are often long queues at the existing cable car terminus. Furthermore, the existing monocable system cannot operate under strong wind conditions, leading to occasional suspension of service. An alternative transport system, namely the Funicular, is therefore proposed as one of the essential elements of the Redevelopment Plan. The funicular will provide the principal means of connection between the Waterfront and the Summit of the redeveloped Ocean Park.
Preliminary planning studies have identified the approximate locations of the funicular termini and investigated alternative alignments. The route length will be approximately 1300m and is expected to run in tunnel through Brick Hill on an approximate 9% uniform gradient.
The Funicular System Contractor shall be responsible for the Manufacturer’s Design, Supply, Installation and Commissioning of the funicular system, under the supervision of the Lead Consultant for Infrastructure.
Responses to the Invitation for Expressions of Interest are sought from suitably qualified manufacturers and suppliers by noon (Hong Kong time) on Monday 8th May 2006.
Award of Contract is anticipated in August 2006. Design, approval, manufacture, supply and delivery of the funicular system will extend to August 2007. Installation, commissioning and acceptance testing should be complete by end of January 2008.
