Gastein: revolutionary "winners-project" for the construction of a guest-centre in Angertal

Interaction and action

The task was to create an indistinguishable building to symbolise the rotating wheel that is the winter tourism of Gastein. Angertal represents a connection between Schlossalm and Stubnerkogel for alpine skiers as well as a starting point for cross-country skiers, winter-walkers and Ski-tourers.

With the creation of the architect model a rounded, poetic and harmonic structure was developed which offers attractive improvements, especially in the area of ski-pistes. The central building, with a various amount of offered services will provide great convenience for guests. Martin Kohlbauers "winners project" is in compliance with the construction, materials and colours of a modern generation, as well as been in harmony with nature. The epicentre is the covered, and therefore weather protected Agora. It is a place of historic importance and modern influences. The overlying "light-tower" directs the sunlight into the inner room. It is from here that guests gain access to all areas of the facility: The information centre, the sport shop with its rental and service area, the ski-school and childrens area. There are sanitary facilities on all floors. The upper floor gallery can be reached by lift. From here one gains access to the restaurant. The spacey Panorama-terrace offers a stunning view of the slopes. The bar on the ground floor is the so-called "In-Treff", especially popular later in the day! The roofing is dominated by a silver-gray larch wood, covering an aliminium roof base, supplemented by glas which gives the construction a transparent feel. Glas is also the dominating material of the "light-tower". The detailed planning will begin this year with the view to open the centre in the 2004/05 winter season.
