Schladming/Austria: “Planet-Planai“ is getting bigger and bigger!

“Planet Planai“, the new symbol of Schladming and the Alpine World Ski Championships 2013, is taking shape. The futuristic project is scheduled for completion in just 220 days in time for the start of the winter season. The 6,500-m2 complex will house the headquarters of Planai-Bahnen and all its subsidiaries, spacious OK rooms for the World Championship and the glass World Championship studio and provide ample space for guests.

Planai-Bahnen is investing a total of some € 26m, with “Planet-Planai“ accounting for around half this sum. The most striking aspect of the building is its groundbreaking architecture. The entire building is enveloped in a huge loop supported by 74 slanting pillars – each with a weight-bearing capacity of 230 tonnes. A total of 270 tonnes of steel and 2000 m3 of cement have been used to date. Although the project is challenging and weather conditions in June were poor, work is proceeding precisely as scheduled. In addition to the many World Championship facilities, there will also be a one-stop shop inside the building. This means visitors will be able to arrange everything that makes a holiday even more relaxing from a central location: rooms, skiing lessons, tickets, etc.; there will also be a 400m2 shop. The Schladming Tourism Association will also be represented.
Planai-Bahnen is also currently installing a detachable eight-seater chairlift in the Mitterhaus ski area and building a reservoir on the Planai. “We want our best product to be even more easily accessible,“ says Ernst Trummer.
