Klenkhart & Partner: Interesting projects during anniversary year 2016

Klenkhart & Partner was able to implement numerous interesting projects during their anniversary year in 2016 (25 years of Alpine Engineering)

Klenkhart & Partner Consulting from Absam/Tyrol has been one of the most sought-after specialists in the field of Alpine Engineering for 25 years now. Numerous national & international projects have now become the hallmark of the ski resort planners from Tyrol. The partners DI Christian Klenkhart & DI Christian Weiler have repeatedly demonstrated their spatial, technical and ecological awareness.

As the infrastructure improvement measures for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz were already being etched into the history books, the planning and implementation procedures for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld (2019) were already in full swing.

Even setting aside work on various major events, many ski resorts have committed themselves to numerous innovative projects and quality improvements. Last year, for example, an extensive modernization programme in the Ifen ski resort in the Kleinwalser Valley was launched. This began with a new cable railway system, the construction of a powerful snowmaking installation, including reservoir, and numerous slope construction activities.

Visitors to Oberstdorf can look forward to the new summit restaurant and the attractive skywalk through the northern face of the Nebelhorn, the new Kinderland playground at the Söllereck and the successful restoration of previous construction measures.

An important, but technically outdated, T-bar lift was replaced by the detachable 6-seater Bierenwang chairlift in the Fellhorn/Oberstdorf ski resort in 2016. The effectiveness of the snowmaking installation was also increased as part of this project. Various slope construction activities had to also be implemented due to the newly situated valley and mountain station areas.

The Warth ski resort is connected to Schröcken and Lech both by ski runs as well as via the ticket network. Based on the snow technology concepts developed by Klenkhart & Partner, construction of a snowmaking installation incl. a central reservoir with a capacity of 170,000 m³ was initiated at the highest point. The plan envisages that the central reservoir will also ensure the provision of water for the snowmaking installation of the neighbouring ski resort of Schröcken. Due to the size of the construction project and the geological conditions (blasting rock in the reservoir area), the construction phase will extend over two years, meaning that the system will only become operational during late summer 2017.

Synergies have been exploited thanks to the amalgamation of Berwanger Sonnalmbahnen with Thanellerkar-Lift GmbH. It has now been possible to interconnect both snowmaking installations in place with a new cast iron pipe thanks to the merger between the two cable railway companies. Both snowmaking installations can be provided with snow water separately – as before – or via the pumping station and the Thanellerkar reservoir. This results in a significant reduction in the time it takes to make snow, especially for the skiing area handled by Berwanger Sonnalmbahnen.
A 3.5 km long descent incl. avalanche protection for the upper section of the new "ZellamseeXpress" 10-seater gondola lift has been constructed in Pinzgau, which will connect the Schmittenhöhe with the Viehofen from next winter.

The central water catchment area of the Hohe Salve cable railway at the Brixentaler Ache had become outdated and experienced ongoing technical problems. The reconstruction (including sand trap and pre-pumping station) was equipped with the finest technology from power plant construction.

The Elferbahnen cable railway system in Neustift is very popular both with skiers and tobogganists. Therefore, improvement measures have become necessary in the area around the Hölltal T-bar lift and in the upper part of the toboggan run. By replacing old snow lines, the snowmaking installation could be extended with additional snow shafts without increasing the pumping capacity. A cooling tower basin in reinforced concrete as well as a cooling tower installation were installed at the existing pumping station in the valley to increase the capacity.

The largest reservoir of the Tyrolean lowlands was constructed for the Westendorf cable railway. This was engineered out of the "Kreuzjöchlsee" scenic reservoir built in 1999. The original 65,000 m³ capacity lake was expanded to 200,000 m³. The aim here was to also make the lake suitable for the landscape and as close to nature as possible, which has been successful.

Because of the decentralised location of the lake in the ski resort, an approx. 2,500 m long supply line and a further 5 km of snow lines had to be laid to improve the network. The excess material from the construction of the reservoir, amounting to approx. 130,000 m³, was used solely for improvement works of existing slopes, such as the "5-er Galerie" ski trail, as well as in the area of the ski trail and Bunaeck slope. The safety of the ski slopes have been significantly enchanced thanks to these improvements.

A cooling tower installation was added to both pumping stations in the area of the Filzalmsee reservoir constructed in 2003, shared by both the Brixen and Söll cableways.

A cooling tower was also added to the pumping station of the Schlosserberg snowmaking installation in the St. Johann in Tirol ski resort.

The erosion banks in the Bansko ski resort in Bulgaria, stretching up to 15 m in height, were causing rock fall problems on the central valley descent when the weather was thawing and had to be secured. This was implemented by means of a back-anchored wooden support wall/wooden anchor wall (sturdy robinia wood, steel rails, steel anchors/IBO anchors) in the upper third. Linkages were formed in the lower section of the slope.

This is just a small sample of all the work implemented. Projects with a construction volume in the amount of 53 million euros have been implemented in total during 2016.
