Sun Peaks Resort: Start of construction on 110 new homesLast week marked an exciting and long-awaited milestone for Sun Peaks, as partners, officials, and community members gathered to celebrate the start of construction on 110 new homes under the Sun Peaks Housing Authority, Meranti Developments, and BC Builds partnership.
The event marked the culmination of years of collaboration and planning between the Resort Municipality, Sun Peaks Resort LLP, and the Province of BC. These homes will be rental units managed under the Sun Peaks Housing Authority.
Len Hrycan, Chair of the Sun Peaks Housing Authority, opened the ceremony by recognizing the many partners who helped make the project possible. “This project wouldn’t have happened without the significant financial support from the Province through the BC Builds program,” said Hrycan. “We’re standing on the shoulders of many visionaries who recognized the importance of housing options in our community.”
He also credited the Resort Municipality CAO Deanna Campbell and Mayor Rob O’Toole, the SPRLLP team, Housing Manager Jessie Abraham, and the Housing Authority Board for their “countless hours” of work alongside the BC Builds steering committee.
Mayor Rob O’Toole spoke about the long-term impact of the project, noting that “the real watershed moment won’t just be today, it will be ten or fifteen years from now, when we see a thriving community where people can put down roots.”
Representing BC Builds, James Forsyth emphasized how quickly the project advanced: “In less than seven months, we’ve gone from our first meeting to full approvals. That’s a record for BC Builds, and a testament to the teamwork and problem-solving of everyone involved.”
Darcy Franklin of Meranti Developments thanked all partners for their collaboration and acknowledged the late Mayor Al Raine, calling the project “a legacy he would have been proud to see realized.”
With construction now well underway, the first residents are expected to move in within 18 months — a milestone that marks real progress toward sustainable, community-based housing in Sun Peaks. |
