Leitner statement: The Stresa-Mottarone ropeway tragedy

THE STRESA-MOTTARONE ROPEWAY TRAGEDY

Leitner is deeply saddened by the Stresa-Mottarone tragedy.

The most recent magnetic rope testing was performed in November 2020 and no irregularities were detected. The entire system was overhauled in August 2016, including the cabins, carriages, drive and electrical equipment. The ropes are checked every November, and every inspection has had a positive outcome. Leitner performs special and standard maintenance on the Stresa-Mottarone ropeway, while daily and weekly operating checks are carried out by the operating company Ferrovie del Mottarone. “Our company extends its deepest condolences to the victims’ families, and to all affected communities. Leitner and its technicians are at full disposal to identify the cause of this terrible tragedy as soon as possible”, states Anton Seeber, president of Leitner.

A LIST OF ALL CHECKS AND MAINTENANCE WORKS PERFORMED BY LEITNER IN RECENT MONTHS

Leitner remains at the full disposal of the legal authorities Vipiteno, 24 May 2021 - With regard to the tragedy that occurred on Sunday on the Stresa-Mottarone ropeway, Leitner hereby publishes a list of the checks and maintenance works carried out in recent months on the basis of the documents in its possession and the internal checks carried out. The checks and maintenance works on the installation comply with the requirements of current legislation as well as with the maintenance contract in place with the operating company “Ferrovie del Mottarone”:
  • Maintenance and inspection of the vehicles’ hydraulic braking systems: 3 May 2021
  • Non-destructive tests on all of the system's mechanical safety components as part of the quinquennial overhaul. These tests were due in August 2021 but were brought forward to 29 March - 1 April 2021
  • Performance tests on the entire drive system: 18 March 2021
  • Lubrication and checks on the running rollers and sheaves in the stations: 4 and 5 March 2021
  • A test simulating a hauling rope breakage activating the track rope brakes -carried out on both vehicles on 1 December 2020
  • Regular magnetic-inductive testing on the hauling ropes (and all ropes of the installation) as per the provisions of Ministry of Transport Executive Decree No. 144 of 18 May 2016 (testing carried out once a year) with positive results: 5 November 2020
The daily and weekly checks required by the operating regulations and the operation and maintenance manual are the responsibility of the operator.

Leitner extends its deepest condolences to the victims’ families, and to all affected communities. Leitner and its technicians remain at the full disposal of the legal authorities to identify the causes of this terrible tragedy as soon as possible
