Big Sky: Doppelmayr/Garaventa builds new aerial tramway in the USA

The new Lone Peak Tram in Big Sky, Montana, lies in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

One of the highlights of this ropeway installation is the cabin design featuring two rectangular glass floor panels that allow a spectacular view in the summer.

Over a period of 18 months, Garaventa constructed a new reversible aerial tramway at Montana’s Big Sky Resort in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The new installation was officially opened in mid-December 2023 and is a cornerstone of the ten-year Big Sky 2025 plan, which is aimed at reimagining and upgrading the visitor experience in the region.

The new tramway replaces an old installation that had been operating for 27 years and climbs 650 vertical meters. The top terminal, located at an elevation of 3,400 meters, is the highest scenic overlook in Montana.

Comfortable cabins

The cabins of the Lone Peak Tram, manufactured by CWA, took 37 days to complete the 8,000-kilometer journey to their destination in Big Sky. Each cabin provides room for 75 people and features two rectangular glass floor panels that provide visitors with a spectacular view in the summer. The panels are covered in the winter. In addition, the cabins offer 12 seats that can be moved or taken out for flexibility plus an integrated loudspeaker system for announcements and music.
