Poma: Cable transport - a powerful tool to transform urban mobilityCable transport is paving the way for cities and metropolitan areas around the world that want to adopt a sustainable urban model. Interest in aerial urban transport links is growing. Thanks to its low footprint, it can be easily integrated without the need for heavy infrastructure, while allowing natural or built obstacles to be overcome. Carbon-free, quick to implement, and attractive to users, it is an effective means of modal shift and interfaces easily with existing transport networks. As an industrial partner to local authorities, POMA is mobilizing its expertise to make cable transport a real public policy tool, promoting smoother, more inclusive urban mobility that is firmly focused on ecological transition. More than ever, POMA is leveraging its global expertise to support local authorities, from system design to mainte- nance. This integrated approach is a powerful way to guarantee the performance, safety, and sustainability of the solu- tions we deliver. The world’s leading cable transport operator, in Réunion, Namur, Santo Domingo, Ajaccio, and more POMA always provides a specific solution for each customer: training, consulting, technical management, commercial operation, as well as maintenance, operation and maintenance in partnership, etc. In Algeria, where ETAC is responsible for 13 cable transport lines, the new gondola lift in Constantine, Algeria, will open to the public on April 22, 2025. SPOTLIGHT ON SOME OF OUR FLAGSHIP PROJECTS FOR 2025: Reinventing mobility in Ajaccio Ajaccio ( island of Corsica, FRANCE) is experiencing high population growth as a cultural and economic center. Both challenges in developing mobility infrastructures and in the redevelopment of key areas like Saint- Joseph district on the seafront have found in ropeway system a relevant sustainable solution. 4 multimodal stations perfectly integrated in their environ- ment will welcome 1,500 people per day to travel comfor- tably between the hospital, the schools, the sports facili- ties and the Mezzavia shopping center, as well as the new residential areas on a 3km distance. The operations and maintenance of “Angelo” ropeway have been entrusted to POMA for the next 10 years. Constantine: the rebirth of a strategic urban gondola Constantine is the capital of eastern Algeria. With its 740,000 inhabitants, it faces the problems of all fast-growing cities: dense urbanization, saturated traffic and pollution. Its com- plex topography led the municipality to install a gondola lift in 2008, which has now been restored following years of stoppage thanks to extensive renovation work on the sta- tions and roller batteries. From three stations strategically positioned from east to west, passing by the city’s CHU hospital, some 2,400 passen- gers an hour will now be able to cover 1.7 km in less than 7 minutes, peacefully flying over roads, crossroads, the gorges of the Oued Rhummel and its congested bridges aboard one of the 58 10-seater cabins. A third connected line in Santo Domingo Santo Domingo’s third cable car line will reinforce and com- plement the existing public transport network, already structured around the Metro lines and urban cable lines 1 and 2, in response to population growth and the saturation of the city’s roads. Over a distance of 7.6 km, it will connect metro line 2 to the port of Haina, with 7 stations located at key points. Supported by the Dominican government, which is convinced of the efficiency of this mode of trans- port, this project is part of their ongoing efforts to trans- form urban mobility in the city, and on a larger scale, in the country. Poma RD will be looking to position itself as an O&M supplier for this new line. A urban cable car line to revamp mobility in Madagascar In Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, the world’s fifth largest island, population growth has grown tenfold in 60 years to reach 3.5 million people today. As part of a sustai- nable drive to restructure the city’s mobility system, a first urban cable car line has been installed to transport more than 40,000 passengers per day. By connecting various districts over 8,7 km via 7 stations, cable transportation is perfectly suited to the complex and rugged topography of the city and aims to improve better inclusion in the economic and social fabric of the city. The 30-minute journey will reduce the commute time for inhabitants who, on average, spend one to two hours each day in traffic jams. Seventy percent of inhabitants currently have no other option but to get around on foot. It aims to improve better inclusion in the economic and social fabric of the city. It also offers the prospect of a better quality of life by reducing carbon and microparticle emissions from urban traffic in one of the most polluted cities in the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A Landmark Valley Lift In The North Of India Mussoorie is at 2000 meters altitude 200km North of New Delhi in the Himalayan mountains. A monocable detachable gondola system will connect this very popular touristic destination from Dehradun city in a 15 minutes aerial. With a length of 5,2km and 1000 meters elevation, it will be the longest of its kind in South Asia, and among the longest in the world. Such project will enhance Mussoorie hill station’s accessibility and will boost its attractiveness. At the same time it will be used as a public transportation mean by regular commuters with a dedicated rate, reducing road traffic and air pollution. Mobility as a key for economic and social development for Mongolia The population of the capital of Mongolia has more than tripled since 1990. At 1.5 million, it accounts for nearly half of the country’s population today. Connecting the suburban settlements to the city center is one of the top priorities of Ulan- Bator. The Tuul River and the Transmongolian Railway are creating a major obstacle to this. Furthermore, the transport network is relatively underdeveloped. A state-of-the-art urban ropeway system turned out to be the most appropriate solution. Shortly, a 4.2-km-long gondola lift with 98 cabins will be operating between the northern districts and the city center, providing access within 11 minutes to essential public services such as the town hall and the Hospital. |
