Mexico: President Sheinbaum Announces Cablebus Line 4 Tlalpan-CU - It Will Be the Longest in the World
From the borough of Tlalpan in Mexico City, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that Cablebús Line 4 will soon connect Los Pedregales to Ciudad Universitaria in just 40 minutes—a route that currently takes around two hours. She emphasized that this project will also help reduce traffic congestion along Avenida Picacho-Ajusco. In addition, she noted that the federal government will provide the funding to the Mexico City administration, with an estimated investment of approximately 280 million USD. Line 4 will be integrated into the existing Cablebús system, which already includes lines in Iztapalapa, Gustavo A. Madero, and Chapultepec. At 11.4 kilometers long, Line 4 will become the longest urban cable car line in the world and will include eight stations: Universidad, Cantera, Perisur, Mercado Hidalgo, Ceforma, Parque Morelos, Cultura Maya, and Pedregal de San Nicolás. It is expected to transport 65,000 passengers daily, with an average journey time of 40 minutes—representing a time savings of approximately 33%. The new line will connect with Metro Line 3, Metrobús Line 1, and Trolleybus Line 12, improving access to Ciudad Universitaria, the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP), the “Fuentes Brotantes” National Park, the “Miguel Hidalgo” market, and the “Ecoguardas” Environmental Education Center. The project will benefit approximately 298,000 residents from 30 neighborhoods in Tlalpan and 9 in Coyoacán. The three existing Cablebús lines have already recorded over 160 million trips; they reduce travel time by 45%, are cost-effective, and serve vulnerable urban areas.
